District 14 Team Secures $5.2 Million in State Funding for Olney Community Hub
OLNEY, Md. April 9, 2025 – The Olney community is celebrating a significant milestone with the announcement that Senator Craig Zucker, along with Delegates Anne Kaiser, Bernice Mireku-North, and Pamela Queen, secured $5.2 million in state funding during the 2025 Maryland General Assembly session to support the “Olney Community Hub” project.
This funding will facilitate the purchase and renovation of the former Capital One Bank building, located at the prominent intersection of Georgia Avenue and Spartan Road. Spearheaded by the Olney Chamber of Commerce, the project aims to transform the building into a vibrant, multi-use facility that will serve the entire greater Olney area.
The Olney Community Hub will provide office space for the Olney Chamber of Commerce, and other key local organizations, such as The Greater Olney Civic Association and the Olney Civic Fund. In addition, the facility will offer community meeting space, creating a welcoming environment where residents can access services and gather.
Montgomery County has also shown strong support for the project. The County Council recently approved an amendment to the FY25-30 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) for the Olney Community Building project. This amendment clears the way for the acquisition of the property later this month, thus ensuring that the project stays on track.
"Delegates Kaiser, Mireku-North, Queen, and I kept our commitment to the community in delivering all the necessary funding to purchase and renovate the new community hub building in the heart of Olney,” said State Senator Craig Zucker. “This county and community facility will provide a much-needed meeting and gathering space as well as a valuable business hub for the Greater Olney area. We are extremely grateful to our community and government partners who helped make this possible.”
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our District 14 team and the county,” said Terri Hogan, Executive Director of the Olney Chamber of Commerce. “Their commitment to Olney has turned this long-needed project into a reality. The renovation of this centrally located building, which has sat vacant for years, is an exciting step forward for our community.”
“Olney is blessed with incredible civic and business leaders working hard and often in volunteer roles to improve the community for everyone. Finally, we’ll be able to provide the physical space these dedicated professionals and volunteers have long deserved,” Montgomery County Councilmember Dawn Luedtke said. “The Olney Community Building will serve as a civic hub for the entire community. It’s fitting that a determined effort led by the Olney Chamber and our State champions including Senator Craig Zucker got us to this exciting milestone.”
This initiative complements the Chamber’s ongoing efforts to develop a permanent police satellite station at the nearby site of the current trailer. Work on this project is also underway.
